What Does Galatians 2:20 Mean?
Galatians 2:20 means that union with Christ changes the believer’s deepest identity. Paul speaks of his old self as having died with Christ, while his present life is now defined by Christ living in him.
This does not mean that Paul ceased to have a personality, responsibilities or individual choices. It means that his old life ruled by self, sin and confidence in religious achievement no longer had the final claim over him.
The Christian life is now lived by faith. Instead of depending on personal merit to be accepted by God, the believer trusts in Jesus Christ and His saving work.
The verse is also deeply personal. Paul points to the love of the Son of God and His self-giving sacrifice. Christian obedience grows from knowing that Christ loved us and gave Himself for us.
The Biblical Context of Galatians 2:20
Galatians 2 addresses a major question in the early church: how are people made right with God? Paul strongly rejects the idea that sinners are justified by observing the works of the law.
In Galatians 2:16, Paul explains that a person is made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ rather than through works of the law. This truth forms the theological background of verse 20.
Paul then explains that through the law he died to the law so that he might live for God (Galatians 2:19). Galatians 2:20 develops that thought through the language of dying with Christ and living a new life of faith.
Verse 21 makes the argument even sharper: if righteousness could come through the law, then Christ’s death would have been unnecessary. Grace and the cross, not human achievement, stand at the centre of Paul’s gospel.

Paul speaks about the Son of God’s love in personal terms. The cross is not only a doctrine to understand; it is the demonstration of Christ’s self-giving love for His people.
Grace Removes Boasting
If our standing before God rests on Christ, we have no basis for spiritual pride. Salvation produces gratitude rather than self-congratulation.
A Devotional Thought on Galatians 2:20
It is possible to believe in Jesus and still speak about yourself mainly in the language of your past. You may keep repeating old labels, failures and regrets as though they are the final truth about who you are.
Galatians 2:20 invites you to see yourself through your relationship with Christ. The old life is not the final chapter. Jesus now becomes the centre from which a new life is lived.
This new life is not sustained by pretending to be strong. It is sustained by faith. Each day you can say, in effect, “I will trust the One who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
When temptation returns, remember who now defines you. When shame returns, remember the cross. When self-reliance returns, remember that the Christian life is lived by depending on Christ.
Let His love shape your decisions today. You do not obey in order to make Jesus love you. You obey because He has already loved you at great cost.
How to Apply Galatians 2:20
Reject old labels that contradict your identity in Christ. Do not allow past sin or failure to become the final description of your life.
Live by daily faith. Bring decisions, temptations and fears to Jesus instead of relying only on your own strength.
Remember Christ’s love. Let the cross remind you that your obedience grows from being loved, not from trying to earn love.
Surrender self-centred priorities. Ask whether your plans reflect Christ’s purposes or only your own comfort and ambition.
Choose obedience from gratitude. Let grace produce a life that increasingly reflects Jesus.

Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me and giving Yourself for me. Thank You that my old life does not have to define my future.
Help me understand what it means to belong completely to You. Let Your life shape my thoughts, choices, priorities and relationships.
Teach me to live by faith instead of depending on my own goodness or strength. When shame, pride or temptation returns, remind me of the cross and of who I am in You.
May my life increasingly reflect Your love. Help me surrender what belongs to the old way of living and walk faithfully in the new life You give.
