What Does John 15:5 Mean?
John 15:5 means that spiritual life and fruitfulness depend on a living relationship with Jesus. Christ is not merely an example to imitate from a distance; He is the source from whom spiritual life flows.
The branch-and-vine picture emphasizes dependence. A branch may look healthy for a short time after being cut off, but it cannot continue producing fruit. Connection to the vine is essential.
Remaining in Jesus involves continuing in faith, receiving His words, obeying Him, depending on Him and living in ongoing fellowship with Him.

The Biblical Context of John 15:5
John 15 belongs to Jesus’ final teaching to His disciples before His arrest. The setting gives the vine imagery special weight because the disciples are about to enter a season when they will no longer see Him physically as before.
In John 15:1–2, Jesus identifies Himself as the true vine and His Father as the gardener who tends the branches.
In John 15:3–4, Jesus calls His disciples to remain in Him, explaining that a branch cannot bear fruit by itself.
